You may have been recommended by a friend, have found a mobile business online that you like the look of, or be travelling to a salon, either way your initial consultation will be the point in which you decide whether or not you go ahead with a fitting, so it is important to get as much as possible out of this meeting.
What is involved in a consultation?
Before we discuss how you will be able to get the most out of your consultation, it first helps to understand what is involved in a consultation. A hair extension consultation is put in place for a number of reasons - it is the first chance you have to meet the person fitting your hair extensions, and for them to meet you, it is a chance to ask lots of questions, and it is also an opportunity for the technician to colour match your hair in person, as
using a photo for colour matching is not a good option. Consultations usually last between 20-30 minutes, and can take place either at your own home, at your hair extension technician’s home, or in a salon depending on the set up they have for their business.
Getting the most out of your consultation
As this is your first opportunity to really speak to the individual who will be fitting your hair extensions it is a great chance to ask lots of questions to help you decide whether you will be going ahead with the fitting or not. Here we will list a number of questions you should consider asking and the types of responses that you should be given to provide you with an idea as to whether or not you would like this person to fit hair extensions for you. By asking lots of questions you will be able to make the most of your consultation time to get a comprehensive understanding before committing to a fitting.
How long have you been fitting hair extensions for?
This is a very important question as it will enable you to understand how experienced this individual is and how long they have been working in the industry for. Ideally the person fitting your hair extensions will have a number of years worth of experience, 1-2 years would be the minimum, however having said this some with very little experience are incredibly talented, so going on this answer alone is not enough to get a true picture of the persons abilities.
Ask to see a portfolio
Without a doubt this should be a priority for your consultation. A portfolio will illustrate examples of this person’s work, to give you a true idea of how your extensions will turn out when finished. Ideally this person will have a large portfolio with lots of different clients, from short to long hair, different colours, and everything in between. If your hair extension technician is not able to show you a portfolio we would suggest that you seek an alternative, as this could suggest that they have not performed many fittings.
Ask for proof of their qualifications
Unfortunately, within this industry you will encounter the odd individual who has taught herself on YouTube to fit hair extensions and claims to be a professional. For this reason alone it is important that you seek proof of their credentials before you commit to a fitting. If your hair extension technician has completed the relevant courses they will have no trouble in providing proof of this for you, however if they seem reluctant or are unable to do this for, this should be seen as a red flag that perhaps this is not the fitter for you.
Ask for a sample of the hair
During the consultation your hair extension technician should provide a sample piece of hair for you to feel, so that you can see what it is you will be having fitted. If your hair extension technician does not provide this for you, we would suggest that you request this before committing to the fitting. The quality of the hair will make a big difference to the overall look of the extensions, and the longevity of the hair, therefore you will want to have an idea of this before it is too late. Ask for a receipt
If you are asked to pay a deposit to book in for your hair extensions, no matter what the amount you should request a receipt as proof of payment. This is to cover yourself so that you know exactly what you have left to pay, and there can be no dispute over this amount.
By asking these types of questions, you will gain a greater understanding of the person fitting your hair extensions, how experienced they are, and the overall outcome you can expect to achieve. Hair extensions are not something which should be decided upon on a whim, therefore take your time to find somebody you trust and like before committing to a fitting, it will be worth the effort in the long run.
