What Products Do I Need To Purchase Before Having Hair Extensions Fitted?

If you are considering getting hair extensions for the first time, before the fitting takes place you will need to think about the products you will require in order look after your hair extensions correctly from day one.

There is a lot of information available regarding the best and worst products to use with hair extensions, however, with so many options coming from various different sources it can be hard to know what you will need without spending a fortune on every lotion and potion going.

Here we list our top aftercare products and items that you will need to get the most from your hair extensions, and why it is important that you use them.

The first product you will need to consider purchasing is a hair extension friendly shampoo.  Hair extension friendly shampoos should be mild formulas which have been designed to work with your hair extension bonds, rather than causing them to break down and soften.  At SimplyHair we offer a hair extension friendly shampoo from our Pebble&Bloom range that is tried and tested on hair extensions, and will make daily washing quick and easy.  In terms of what not to use, when wearing hair extensions it is very important that you use products which are specifically designed for hair extensions, and stay well clear of any products that contain oils or serums, as these can affect the integrity of your bond  which causes shedding and – in worst case scenarios – the hair extension detaching altogether

Secondly, you will need to purchase a complimentary conditioner that has also been designed to be used with hair extensions.  From our Pebble&Bloom range you will find a conditioner that is gentle on the hair and provides long lasting shine and a smooth finish, which makes brushing your hair easy.  You must be very careful to never apply conditioner to your bonds under any circumstances, and should focus on the midlengths to tips of the hair only.  If you require any further guidance on how to wash your hair extensions correctly, please see our how to wash your hair extensions article which will provide you with extensive details on the do’s and don’ts of this everyday task.

Oils

In addition to your everyday products such as shampoo and conditioner, you will also need something to use for those times when your hair extensions are in need of a little extra TLC.  This may be as a result of a holiday, a weekend in the sun, or being splashed in the argon600pool, and as hair extensions are not attached at the root to receive nourishment from the scalp, it is essential that you fill in the gap with an appropriate product.  For this we would recommend an oil based treatment such as Argan oil or Jojoba oil.  Argan oil is a fantastic source of nourishment as it will leave your hair extensions feeling silky and soft, whilst Jojoba oil is the closest match in terms of its biological structure to sebum, the oil produced from the scalp, so it’s the perfect replacement for your locks.  However, it is very important to remember that, like your hair extension conditioner, oils must never be placed near the root, and should be concentrated to the mid lengths and ends only.

Habobblegroupir Bands

Hair bands are also an essential if you are considering hair extensions.  Not only will they allow you to create beautiful up dos for the day, but they will become an integral part of your night time routine, and not preparing to purchase some beforehand could spell trouble.  These do not need to be expensive – a simple band will be enough – however try to purchase one without a metal link that can snag on the hair, and of course NEVER use an elastic band even if you are desperate.  For more information on how to wear your hair extensions at night please click on the link.

Hair Brush

Following on from the hair band, you will also need to purchase a hair brush suitable for use with your hair extensions before they are fitted.  There are lots of hair brushes available, however ones suitable for hair extensions can be a little harder to find, and it is important that you purchase the correct one to stop the brush snagging on your hair extension bonds – such as our specially created hair extensions brush.  If you are unsure as to how to brush you hair extensions correctly please click on the link which will provide you with detailed instructions on best practises.
