Shedding Hair with Hair Extension Removal - Should I Be Worried

Hair loss is a common worry of anybody considering hair extensions, however, it needn’t be. Hair extensions that are fitted correctly by a trained professional maintained regularly and cared for correctly with a good aftercare routine will not cause any damage to your natural hair, and are a great way to add length and volume to your hair. A common question we are asked however is why when hair extensions are removed, does there appear to be some natural hair contained within the bond, and the answer to this is very simple.

The average person will lose around 50-100 hairs per day as part of the natural hair cycle. You only have to consider how often you clear out your hairbrush to realise that you naturally lose a lot more hair than you realise on a daily basis.

When you are wearing any kind of permanent hair extension your hair is closed inside a bond, meaning that any hairs that would naturally shed and come out, for example in your hairbrush or down the drain when the hair is washed, it trapped and cant fall free.

After 4 months when your hair extensions are due to be removed, you would have naturally shed around 12,000 hairs, and the majority of these naturally shredded hairs will be trapped inside the bond with the hair extension.

It is for this reason that when hair extensions are removed, natural hair will appear in the pile of removed hair extensions, and this is COMPLETELY NORMAL. This should not cause you any worry, and will not have caused your hair to thin or become damaged.

You must remember that when you are wearing hair extensions, over a 4 month period you will become accustomed to the feeling of having very thick, full-bodied hair. When your hair extensions are removed it is common to forget what your hair actually looked and felt like before, so some adjustment may be needed to get used to how your natural hair again. Shedding from your hair extensions is a normal part of the process, however, if at any point you do become concerned, contact your hair extensionist to talk it through with her. A professional hair extensionist will have many years of experience in dealing with this situation and will be able to talk you through this in detail to ease your mind.

The key to hair extensions is also in finding a professional, reliable hair extension technician who is fully qualified and practised in the method you are opting for.
